Cranberry Township, in the southwestern corner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was incorporated in 1804. The community’s name derives from the wild cranberries which formerly grew in the area. It covers 15,163 acres (23.69 square miles), and has a population of approximately 30,000 – essentially double its 1990 count. A different but much smaller community with the same name is located in Venango County, immediately north of Butler County.
One reason for Cranberry’s rapid growth has been its location. Situated at the intersection of I-76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike) I-79, and Routes 19 and 228, the community is easily accessible from virtually anywhere in the region. In addition, the opening of I-279 North in 1989 cut travel time between Cranberry and Pittsburgh to less than half an hour. As a result, many residents commute into the city and Cranberry is often characterized as a suburb of Pittsburgh.
Cranberry Township is situated within PennDOT District 10, U.S. Congressional District 4, the 12th Pennsylvania Legislative District, the state’s 40th Senatorial District, and the Seneca Valley School District. Cranberry is Butler County’s largest municipality.
